I’m exhausted from the war… the daily casualties and the bombs exploding everywhere… it really seems like there is no solution for a happy, peaceful ending. No, I’m not talking about Iraq. I’m referring to my home.

If you are bored, and if you want to stir up some excitement and drama in your life, just invite a person from another country, who speaks a different language, who has an entirely different culture, whose political views are basically anti-American, and with whom you are comfortable enough to drop the formalities and be yourself… and just sit back and see what happens. Just to make things more interesting, have them stay for one month at the most stressful time of the year. Throw in some education and intellect on both sides, the ability to construct excellent arguments and lob stinging “zingers,” passion for one’s beliefs, and the tenacity of a pit-bull. Yes, that should do it. A nice recipe for a home-grown war.

I have noticed that although I might not love everything about America – although I might complain loudly from time-to-time – if some outsider disparages her, I am waving my stars and stripes obnoxiously. Same with just about everything else. Reminds me of a football cheer – DE-FENSE, DE-FENSE.

I realize that my beliefs have been formed by so many outside factors which have caused an internal reaction and resulted in ideas which are firmly etched onto my soul, although I also realize that the evolution isn’t complete, and that future events will continue to flow over and through me to change the shape of these stone tablets I now live by, much like a river changes the rocks in its bed, ever so slowly.

But on any particular day, at any particular moment, these rocks exist in a particular form, and I see them clearly with my eyes as they are, and I say, “this is the truth.” No doubts, no “maybe’s.” No one will convince me of any other truth besides my own.

A song keeps running through my head by John Mayer….

John Mayer Belief Lyrics

is there anyone who ever remembers
changing their mind from the paint on a sign?
is there anyone who really recalls
ever breaking rank at all
for something someone yelled real loud one time?
oh, everyone believes
in how they think it oughta be
oh, everyone believes
and they’re not going easily

belief is a beautiful armor
but makes for the heaviest sword
like punching underwater
you never can hit who you’re trying for
some need the exhibition
and some have to know they tried
it’s the chemical weapon
for the war that’s raging on inside
oh, everyone believes
from emptiness to everything
oh, everyone believes
and no one’s going quietly

we’re never gonna win the world
we’re never gonna stop the war
we’re never gonna beat this
if belief is what we’re fighting for

we’re never gonna win the world
we’re never gonna stop the war
we’re never gonna beat this
if belief is what we’re fighting for

is there anyone you can remember
ever surrendering with their life on the line?

we’re never gonna win the world
we’re never gonna stop the war
we’re never gonna beat this
if belief is what we’re fighting for

we’re never gonna win the world
we’re never gonna stop the war
we’re never gonna beat this
if belief is what we’re fighting for

what puts a hundred thousand children in the sand?
belief can, belief can
what puts a folded flag inside his mother’s hand?
belief can, belief can

The nice thing is that we are able to talk (for hours and hours ad nauseam) about this war, and the philosophy behind it, and he pointed out cleverly that, in order for a superiority complex to exist and function well, there must also exist an inferiority complex to balance it. Both are raging in me, which must mean they rage equally in him. And so we feed off of one another in this endless battle of meaningless drivel.
